The newsies and memories part 2 : Silly Season
When you believe in things you don't understand, you suffer. But just pretend that's ok , and "everything will be fine" .
For the largest part of my life, growing up in the center of Western Europe, there was always this thing called “Cucumber season” if directly translated.
But in the English speaking world, this was always called “Silly season”.
Which wasn’t about food at all, and there was definitely nothing silly about it.
When I started writing this article I had several headlines of articles lined up that I was going to link too , and bring up related stories for each of them from an international perspective and across different timesframes… But by the time I finished writing all this I realised , that this is sort of a universal rememberance that can be applied to literally every major headline on every major news outlet on this fine morning.
So I’m sure , that somewhere today, you will read a news headline that will illicit the following reaction in your mind… and that reaction is… “Oh my ****-ing thing I believe in… what the hell is going on!?” .
right?
The funniest thing of all is that no matter …
- which political ideology you believe in,
- how much you even know about history or current events
- which religion or lack thereof you prescribe too
- which gender or lack thereof you prescribe too
- which level of colour blindness you posess
- how old you are
- where you live in this world
- how sane or insane you are
- which lable you are currently trying to cling too or are trying to escape
- …
You will have that reaction to whatever news coming out of which of those things, and no matter what platform.
There is simply absolutely no escaping it. You are confronted by something like that this very day , when you read this. And it doesnt even matter when you read it even.
Even that is completely fungible in this entire process , for each and every human being on planet earth that would, could or should ever read this.
Isn’t that immensely fascinating! That’s what I’m reminded about first, when I was scanning all these news article.
I’m also super curious for any and all feedback and discussion from anyone who remembers other things when they read the news today.
But let’s get back to those 2 news articles I shared in the beginning of this article.

Each and every year an incredible amount of time is spent by an incredibly large group of people on vacation , that will go and enjoy some “Light reading” . And I’m pretty sure that in those articles, you will find exactly what you’re looking for. And it’s available in many different language too.
And I also know you probably just skimmed the article, without diving into those links anyways.. Which is really good, since I’m trying to convince you to make them your “light reading” for this season as you go on holiday and escape the very meaning behind those very words you will be reading as you sip a Mai-Tai on a beach or something like that.
Welcome to “Silly Season” ! Or what I was thaught to call “Cucumber season”! in one of those 5 languages I speak.
It’s about the yearly news cycle.
It was a description of the fact that in the summer months the media didn’t have many exciting things to report since everyone was on holiday in July and August , all across Europe. (And please realize , that on the other side of the globe , that thing called the “Southern Hemisphere” … the exact same thing happens, but then upside down and in our winter, which is when the peak of the other side of this thing occurs of course.
The peak of summer here, are the depths of winter there and reversed.
You only get to remember and truly understand those things and their interaction once you’ve spent a lot of time on the equator… and a lot of time above it… and a lot of time below it. For me, there is an important lesson in how actually remembering something works, but we’ll get back to that later in this article.
The origins of these terms of silly cucumbers are ofcourse a source of debate , especially right in the middle of silly cucumber season for instance. Just comparing all these different origin stories of this strangely cannibalistic way of describing the absolute worst parts of histories is an activity that fits perfectly into the same pattern of what it describes too. The recursiveness of all this is just infinite , and just keep surfing down that drain long enough and you’ll become silly enough you’ll just start laughing uncontrollably and probably end up eating a cucumber salad or sandwich. So even that’s recursive.
This article is about what I remember when I do one of my news scans of global events.
And we can definitely say that today the Silly Season of 2025 on the northern hemisphere has definitely started!
For me that immediately reminds me of literally all these different origin stories of the term at the same time. That’s how reading works for me, and it keeps amazing me almost every moment of my existence that apparently things don’t work like that for the humans I keep meeting in that lifetime.
Apparently people can’t remember all these things at the same time , but can only seem to remember one thing at a time. Which has always fascinated me. And when I come across fascinating things, I tend to dive even deeper into understanding them. Which makes it even easier to remember them. But apparently that’s definitely not how most humans operate through their daily lives.
Which is a sad thing to be honest, because I constantly see and hear people do things to escape perception because it makes them feel bad…
Every year, over and over again.
And it seems that while I get older and roam this earth , it’s becoming obvious that the rest of humanity is loosing it’s ability to rememember anything anymore at an increasing rate.
Memory loss, short term and long term is exploding exponentially at the moment, all across the globe.
And if you’re now left wondering how and why that is?
Well… We’ve been writing about that before on this newsletter havent we?
Please allow me to remind you of a few of those… Because… well… It’s cucumber season see… and all news outlets then just hash out some random slop to have an excuse to copy-paste something old to you again without having to bother with making something new, while the user thinks it actually is. ;)

And I always remember all of them completely , all the time… and they’re but a sliver, of a scratch on a speck of dust on a grain of sand on the tip of an iceberg which is but a small part of the amount of water on that planet, which is still insignificant compared to the total amount of water in our galaxy…
